The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to the Game
The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces several new features and updates related to riding animals in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the development team had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we desired a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," explained a senior product manager. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your allies on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer says. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the jab attack, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] perfect for knightly combat."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.
In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it should be made an Olympic sport immediately.
Another major addition in this new update is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells found in-game for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to come up for air for a breath.
The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've been thinking about this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the perfect moment to also bring in something for underwater," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also points out that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Other additions include the Parched, desert-exclusive skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are refinements, including some highly requested adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can give your horse the best defense it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the year-end release of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
