British Expands Methanol Poisoning Advisory List with Eleven Destinations

Methanol warning sign

British government has added eleven further destinations to its official warning list regarding the threats of methanol toxicity from tainted beverages.

This updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after a number of notable cases such as the fatal death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic chemical typically employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for drinking.

While it is generated during the production of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Government Advice for Tourists

Government minister a senior official stated that every traveler should know the signs of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"When you are drinking spirits overseas, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"In case something appears suspicious, for example a headache that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor fast."

The entire register of nations listed as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
